Enduring

The symmetry of the game is enduring

Change does happen

The field deepens and shortens

The walls go higher and lower

But the symmetry remains

Nine playing

The ball with the defense

Not the offense like other games

The players on each side

Uniform in desire

And clothing

Against the summer heat

The coaches grumble

The manager manages

And the umpires keep the ball

And the players

Between the lines

My mother’s generation

Her father’s generation

Would recognize and be comfortable watching
